Stone houses abandoned in South East Kansas

PHOTOGRAPHS AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE Living in Sedan Kansas give me the unique opportunity to travel the back roads  of Chautauqua county, and surroundings counties looking for old stone houses that have long been abandon and forgotten.

Most of these old stone structures once was a families home, I can't imagine the toil and hard labor one had to endure to construct and maintain these stone houses.

This one sets on a small hill over looking the dirt road below.
there are open meadows to the East across the rd.
while I was there, the whitetail deer were grazing in a pasture several hundred yards from me.

Hi up on the hill this old two story stone house
is crumbling to the ground.

The old house looks like it was a small mansion in it's time

there were 2 stories and huge well sets in the yard next to the house

Probably hand dug

The root cellar was huge, constructed like a half dome
everyone of these rocks were hand picked and hand laid to form
the cellar Look how huge it was.

these cellars served several purposes, protection from the wicked
Kansas weather, and a place to keep the canned food from the garden.

I am not sure how the people accessed  this house as it sets on a small hill
with no access road leading to the house.

Enjoy the photographs
leave a comment so I know you have been here.

Thank you for looking
have a blessed day

Travel Kansas, The Foster House and the North Caney Creek

Chautauqua County Kansas,

the old Foster House located north of Sedan Kansas,

Chautauqua County Kansas, Nestled in front of the old Foster House located north Of Sedan Kansas, The North Caney creek was the power source for the mill located above the creek. Built back in the 1880 rd's there is not much information about the old mill. The House better known as the Foster House to many of the local people still stands, the creek has a small water fall that flows gently south , The water falls can been seen from the rd.22, there is a small dirt path down to the creek where one can get up close and personal with nature.

Built sometime around 1880
The original house was a one story floor mill
The water wheel was powered by the North Caney Creek
which runs in front of the house.

This house once served as the Grafton Post office
early 1900's

The house was purchased by The Foster' in the 1930's

Loyd Foster added the second story to the House.
using roof tiles from the Peru Brick Factory.

The boardwalk will lead you down the path to the waterfalls

Nad if you happen to luck enough to be there after a big rain you will see
the waterfalls in their full glory

The gazebo has been the center of attention for many years

even better than before.

There are benches to set on

Stone pathways to follow
